Dream Location

Recently we were extremely blessed to be able to shoot our latest collection at The Links Hope Island. Wow what a venue! The grounds are absolutely spectacular as one would expect of a premier Gold Coast Golf Course Resort and the environment is warm and welcoming.

The Links is primarily a world class 18 hole golf course set amongst lush green landscapes. Quintessentially Australian you’ll even witness kangaroos bounding across the course and see amazing bird life. To warm up there is a putting green by the clubhouse where you can grab a coffee pre-game or sit and have a delicious lunch overlooking the course at the Ambrosia Cafe & Bar.

When you’re next on the Gold Coast it’s worth a visit whether you’re a golfer or not. As a family we quite often lunch at The Links because of the relaxing view and great food so we can genuinely recommend it.

During the shoot the marketing team thought our clothes were so lovely they asked us to do the fashion at their upcoming Melbourne Cup event. Keep an eye on our socials! Or better still, come and join us on the day.

A huge thank you to the The Links Hope Island for letting us shoot at such a perfect location.

Love is in the air

Romance is certainly in the air at the present time and the dream of most little girls of marrying a prince is at least becoming reality for one young lady.   Today I was pleased to hear from one of the recent designers of a royal wedding dress that he would drape Ms Markle in silk crepe which is exactly the choice of silk used for our My Darling Jeannie silk kaftans and dresses.

While heavy brocades and satins are glorious, silk is a fabric that emits romance with its luxurious and tactile feel, the way it glides over the body and moves seductively with each step.  Silk is so breathable for those moments when your prince scoops you into his arms and crushes you against him.    It’s so perfect for packing for that honeymoon cruise through the Greek Islands, jetting to Morocco or sailing to our beautiful Great Barrier Reef.

We would like to wish all the princes and princesses marrying today our sincere wishes for the most wonderful lives together and to our dear friend Princess Nadeine who is marrying her Prince this afternoon we wish her a world of happiness.

Gloria xx

Mother’s Day – my favourite day of the year!

It’s better than my birthday.  It’s even better than Christmas.  I LOVE Mother’s Day and always have.  As a family we always gather on Mother’s Day to celebrate together, share sweet gifts, heartfelt cards, but most importantly each other’s company.

I still remember as a little girl each year at school we’d have our Mother’s Day stall, and visiting the display was always so exciting. As I approached the treasure trove of nicknacks and whatnots I’d have butterflies in my tummy hoping I’d find the perfect gift.  The gift that would make Mum smile and wrap me in a big warm hug.  One year I remember buying Mum an ashtray (Lordy I can’t even imagine that now!), so I probably didn’t get it right every single year.

Our family Mother’s Days included my Nan (Jeannie) of course.  She was the centre of all our world’s.  Cherished and loved so deeply. So Mother’s Day has become a day of mixed emotions.  Bittersweet. But she’s in our hearts always and she’ll be watching on as we have breakfast together this Sunday, sending her love down from above.

Nowadays I still love spending Mother’s Day with my Mum, but it’s become even more precious to me since I became a Mum myself.  My daughter Poppy is my best achievement, so Mother’s Day is the day when I guess I celebrate myself too.  Not because I think I’m the world’s best mum…It’s a tough gig and I don’t always get it right…But because I feel so proud that I made a little human who is full of joy (well, most of the time) and potential viagra generico italia.  When you create life and become a mother you also create unconditional love.  That love is so powerful and wonderful that it overwhelms you with euphoria. And that is why Mother’s Day is my favourite day of the year.

So this Sunday our My Darling Jeannie family wishes all mothers and maternal souls, on Earth and above, a truly wonderful Mother’s Day.

People quite often ask me, ‘Why kaftans?’

People quite often ask me, ‘Why kaftans?’. What made me start a boutique specialising in this particular style of dress? And I guess the answer is that it was just an extension of my childhood really. Some of my oldest and fondest memories are of growing up surrounded by strong, bold country women on my Nan’s side. They were very close, outgoing and all shared a similar wicked sense of humour. When they got together there was always a lot of laughter and boy could I tell you some funny stories about their card games. But apparently what happens at the card table stays at the card table, which is probably for the best. These women were all wonderful and they were all REAL. There was a mix of ages, personalities and body types, but something they seemed to have in common was their choice of dress when there was a family occasion…and it was kaftans.

I remember walking in to our family parties and there would be a sea of swirling colours. Bright and full of energy…just like my maternal great aunts and aunts. They were all proud and immaculately groomed with perfectly coiffed hair and make-up applied according to the latest trend. And it’s here that I’m going to sneak in that I hold them responsible for my thin eye brows that never grew back 😉 But they did unknowingly teach me how to take pride in my appearance and introduce me to soft, flowing dresses that exude femininity. I remember looking at them thinking they looked like princesses at a ball. So pretty and full of life. But at the heart of it, they were simple country girls who dressed as much for comfort as they did for fashion. That’s where my love affair with kaftans began and evolved over the years.

Back then kaftans were mostly made in cotton, in a plain colour with embroidered flower motives. Well, the ones in our family were anyway. Now kaftans are available in most soft fabrics from plain colours to dramatic prints. Their cuts also vary which adds to their appeal. Maxi. Mini. Kaftan style tops. And different necklines. And they seem to be more versatile than all those years ago with women now teaming them with leggings, pants, wearing them off the shoulder, tying them across the décolletage or tying them from underneath to reveal some leg. I like to tuck mine into my underwear much to the horror of my mother. From formal to fun there seems to be a kaftan for every occasion and body shape, with all of them looking fabulous!

When Mum and I made the decision to start the business and share our love of this timeless dress with other women it became clear very quickly that we are drawn to bright and bold colours. Each collection has a mix of vibrant hues with a few more subtle prints thrown in for those occasions when understated is more elegant.

We want to help women not only look beautiful but also feel beautiful, which is why we chose silk for our label. It’s such a seductive fabric that feels luxurious against your skin. And ladies, let me tell you, your partner will love it too.

Our passion was brought to life thanks to Jeannie and her loving husband Alf, my Grandparents. Their love story is on our website. But the original inspiration was a gift from the amazing women who introduced me to kaftans and who are the reason I associate them with happy times, pants-wetting laughter and love.

Here’s to ALL women around the world today and every day

The earliest Women’s Day observance, called “National Woman’s Day,” was held on February 28, 1909 in New York. As we know much has happened since then both good and bad and much is still to be done regarding equal pay and opportunities. But ladies we have come a long way and today we witness female heads of state, politicians and CEOs who broke through that glass ceiling making it easier for young women today. We give thanks to those women who did it the hard way, showing that gender was not a barrier to success.

We though are so fortunate to live in the society that we do.  My heart goes out to my sisters who live in communities where they are second class citizens, where they have neither rights nor a voice over their bodies and lives, where genital mutilation still exists.   Communities where women are supressed, where education is non-existent where young women are raped and subjected to unwanted pregnancies, these are the girls and women we should also be thinking of today.

The UN theme for International Women’s Day 2018 is “Time is Now: Rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives”.  Kathryn and I have personally witnessed this in the slums of India where women were once totally voiceless second-class citizens. Urban activists working in these slums have helped many women, educating them with regard to their rights and instilling confidence. Some are granted small loans to start for example a sewing or hairdressing business.  This transforms the lives of these once powerless women and elevates them financially, but just as importantly it elevates them socially, giving them a respect that they had never thought possible. This also has a flow on effect throughout the family making education easier for other girls and women.

I was lucky I grew up in a family where women were loved and respected.  I never thought for an instant that I was not equal to a male. I know that many women in Australia are subjected to humiliation and disrespect in the home and workplace and this is an ongoing work in progress to rid our society of these abhorrent behaviours.

Ladies we have come a long way and we should stand united and be proud of who we are.  While we are raising a glass of bubbles today, I just ask you to pause and reflect on our sisters both near and far who still have a hard road to travel.

Here’s to ALL women around the world today and every day!
